About Me

A Spring Sweater

I am counting down the days until spring arrives. I can’t wait to pack up my winter boots, jackets, and scarves. While spring doesn’t usually necessitate tank tops and flip flops, I do enjoy wearing beautiful pastel colored short sleeved shirts at this time. To stay warm during the cool spring mornings and nights, I often slip on a colorful sweater over my short sleeved blouse. Sweaters are a great way to bridge the gap in your wardrobe between the cold winter months and the hot summer months. If you currently don’t own any spring sweaters, now is a great time to stock up on them. On this blog, you will learn how to find the perfect sweaters to match your spring shirts. Enjoy!

5 Suggestions to Make Your Rafting Experience Safe and Enjoyable

by Anna Obrien

When renting a raft, you need to know more than what type of watercraft to rent. Among other things, you need to also know about safety equipment and the proper way to hold your paddle. Hiring a guide is another good idea for inexperienced rafters. That said, here are some things to keep in mind when renting a raft:

1. Wear Personal Safety Equipment

It's imperative to get fitted for a life jacket. The rental company may provide life jackets and employ experts who can help you obtain the correct fit. This device will help keep you afloat should you fall in the water, thus prevent you from drowning. Keep in mind that the jacket should not restrict your breathing, yet should not be loose enough to slide over your head.

You also should wear a helmet to protect your head. In the event of an accident, head trauma may occur from hitting a rock. Be sure the helmet fits correctly and is not too large or too snug.

2. Don't Lose Control of the Paddle

While rafting, you will need to be in control of your paddle at all times. For one thing, you need to know the proper way to grasp the paddle. One hand should firmly grip the T-bar, while the other hand grips the base of the paddle. If you let go of the T-grip while rafting, you could end up injuring another in the raft by hitting them in the face. If you need further instruction, ask your guide to demonstrate the proper technique.

3. Be Aware of the River Currents, Classifications, and Flow

Rafting during the summer may provide you with a calmer water flow and current. Classifications of rivers range from call 1 through 6, with 1 being a good choice for beginners. Educate yourself on these classifications and the river you are planning to raft on.

4. Stay Hydrated and Use Sun Screen

It's imperative to stay hydrated when rafting. The dry air and the sun can make you dehydrated if you do not drink enough water. In addition to increasing your water intake, use a good sunscreen to prevent skin damage from the scorching rays of the sun.

5. Never Go Rafting by Yourself

Last but not least, just as the buddy system is a good bet for swimming, the same rule applies to rafting. Take along a buddy just in case you run into trouble. Rafting alone could result in a perilous situation should you experience trouble or an injury.
